How Rain Insurance Works
We pay you the payout amount for each Covered Day on which the trigger is met within the rainfall coverage hours at your insured location, up to your Maximum Payout amount. To work out the rainfall at your insured location, we use trusted weather data sources. Trusted data sources include MetService NZ and the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF).
This insurance is not travel insurance. It is not intended to cover cancellation costs for your protected activity. The payout is made if it rains enough and we pay whether you decide to continue with, change, or cancel your protected activity.
You don’t need to prove any loss – if it rains enough, we confirm your payment details and then authorise the payment immediately.
Who Can Buy and When To Buy
- You must be 18 years or older to buy the insurance.
- You can purchase the insurance for any protected activity taking place in New Zealand.
- You must buy the insurance at least 7 days before the start of your insured dates.
- You must pay the premium quoted to you for the insurance before the start of your insured dates.
- If we do not receive full payment for your policy when it is due, we may cancel the policy. If this happens, we will notify you and the policy will end from the date and time we specify in that notice.
- The insurance must be for your own personal purposes and not for a commercial or business purpose.
What’s Covered
We pay you the payout amount for each Covered Day on which the trigger is met at your insured location, up to your Maximum Payout amount. Your policy schedule shows the insured location, insured dates, Covered Day(s), rainfall coverage hours, rain threshold, the number of qualifying hours required to meet the trigger, and payout amount per Covered Day, and your Maximum Payout amount.
What’s Not Covered
We don’t pay:
- For rainfall that does not result in the required number of qualifying hours being recorded within the rainfall coverage hours on a Covered Day.
- More than your Maximum Payout amount in total.
- Fraudulent claims.
How to Make a Claim
If the trigger is met on any Covered Day at your insured location, we send you an email or SMS within 24 hours with a WeatherIt link to receive your payment via PayPal, or, where PayPal is unavailable, request your bank account details to make the payment.
We use weather data from MetService NZ to confirm rainfall levels. If that data is unavailable, we will use secondary data from the ECMWF.
The name and location of the applicable MetService NZ weather station closest to your insured location is shown in your policy schedule and we will source rainfall data from that weather station. The location of the MetService NZ weather station will likely differ from your actual insured location, with this distance identified on your policy schedule. Where secondary data from the ECMWF is used, we will obtain data for the same location as specified in your policy schedule.
There is no excess to pay when you make a claim.
Once we obtain data from MetService NZ or ECMWF, as applicable, this data will not be modified, and it shall be considered final, accurate and binding for all parties. No extraneous evidence of rainfall shall be considered by MetService NZ, ECMWF or the Insurer.
We assess rainfall data for up to 2 days after your insured dates end. If the trigger has not been met within that window, no payout is due and the claim is closed.
Cancelling Your Insurance
This insurance cannot be cancelled for a refund once purchased. Your cover remains in place for your insured dates and insured location regardless of whether your protected activity proceeds, changes, or is cancelled. If the trigger is met on any Covered Day, you will still receive the payout amount for that Covered Day, up to your Maximum Payout amount.
Complaints
If you have a complaint, contact WeatherIt at hello@weatherit.ai
They will acknowledge receipt of your complaint within 1 working day and aim to respond within 30 days. If you are not happy with the outcome, you may lodge a complaint with the Insurance & Financial Services Ombudsman (IFSO) Scheme at www.ifso.nz.
If IFSO can hear your complaint (it’s free of charge to you) and where they make a determination about your complaint, both we and you have to comply with it unless you do not accept IFSO’s decision. If that’s the case, you can decide to pursue your complaint through the courts of New Zealand.
Fair Insurance Code of Conduct

You also authorise us to obtain from ICR personal information about you that is (in our reasonable opinion) relevant to this insurance or any claim made under it.
