About this Policy

This document is your policy wording and it explains how our rain insurance works, what’s covered, what’s not, and what your rights are. This policy and your policy schedule, together contain the terms on which we agree to insure you.

Before you decide whether to buy this insurance, read the policy and your policy schedule carefully and if you have any questions contact WeatherIt at hello@weatherit.ai

This policy applies to WeatherIt rain insurance purchased directly from WeatherIt in Australia.

Who Provides This Insurance

WeatherIt offers this insurance as an Authorised Representative (AR No. 001317725) of the insurer. The insurer is Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance Company Ltd (ABN 49 000 525 637; AFSL No. 240 816), an Australian Prudential Regulation Authority regulated insurer.

Terms we use in this document

Certain words used in this document have a special meaning. To help you understand these terms, we show them in bold in the document and explain what they mean below:

“Covered Day”: the date(s) specified in your policy schedule as a Covered Day. This is the day (or days) on which the rainfall coverage hours apply and for which a payout amount may become payable.

“insured dates”: the cover start date and the cover end date of this insurance as shown in your policy schedule.

“insured location”: the geographical location in Australia specified in your policy schedule.

“Maximum Payout amount”: the total amount specified in your policy schedule as the Maximum Payout amount, being the most we will pay under this policy regardless of the number of Covered Days on which the trigger is met.

“payout amount”: the fixed amount we will pay for each Covered Day on which the trigger is met, as shown in your policy schedule, up to your Maximum Payout amount.

“protected activity”: the accommodation, event or activity or plan that you intend to undertake at your insured location during your insured dates. We do not verify your protected activity or require evidence of it.

“qualifying hour”: any clock hour (for example, 9:00am to 10:00am) within the rainfall coverage hours in which the rainfall at your insured location, as measured at the weather station shown in your policy schedule, is equal to or greater than the rain threshold. Rainfall is counted in the clock hour in which it falls.

“rain threshold”: the minimum rainfall amount (in millimetres) specified in your policy schedule that must be recorded within a single clock hour for that hour to be a qualifying hour.

“rainfall coverage hours”: the hours shown in your policy schedule, applying on each Covered Day. All times in this policy and your policy schedule are local time at your insured location.

“trigger”: the minimum number of qualifying hours, consecutive or not, specified in your policy schedule that must occur within the rainfall coverage hours on a Covered Day for a payout to be made in respect of that Covered Day.

“WeatherIt”: Insuretech Services Pty Ltd trading as WeatherIt (ABN 26 683 621 285, AR No. 001317725).

“we”, “us”, “our”: the insurer, Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance Company Ltd (ABN 49 000 525 637, AFSL No. 240 816).

“you”, “your”: the person shown as the ‘Policyholder’ on your policy schedule.

“your policy schedule”: the document titled ‘policy schedule’ we issue to you that confirms the details of your insurance.

How Rain Insurance Works

We pay you the payout amount for each Covered Day on which the trigger is met within the rainfall coverage hours at your insured location, up to your Maximum Payout amount. To work out the rainfall at your insured location, we use trusted weather data sources. Trusted data sources are the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) and the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF).

This insurance is not travel insurance. It is not intended to cover cancellation costs for your protected activity. The payout is made if sufficient rainfall occurs, and we will pay the benefit regardless of whether you continue with or change your protected activity. Your rights in the event of cancellation are explained in clause 9.

You don’t need to prove any loss – if it rains enough, once you accept your claim and confirm your payment details, we authorise the payment immediately.

Who Can Buy and When To Buy

  • You must be 18 years or older to buy the insurance.
  • You can purchase the insurance for any protected activity taking place in Australia.
  • You must buy the insurance at least 7 days before the start of your insured dates.
  • You can buy the insurance up to 12 months before the start of your insured dates.
  • You must pay the premium quoted to you for the insurance before the start of your insured dates.
  • If we do not receive full payment for your policy when it is due, we may cancel the policy. If this happens, we will notify you and the policy will end from the date and time we specify in that notice.
  • The insurance must be for your own personal purposes and not for a commercial or business purpose.

What’s Covered

We pay you the payout amount for each Covered Day on which the trigger is met at your insured location, up to your Maximum Payout amount. Your policy schedule shows the insured location, insured dates, Covered Day(s), rainfall coverage hours, rain threshold, the number of qualifying hours required to meet the trigger, and payout amount per Covered Day, and your Maximum Payout amount.

What’s Not Covered

We don’t pay:

  • For rainfall that does not result in the required number of qualifying hours being recorded within the rainfall coverage hours on a Covered Day.
  • More than your Maximum Payout amount in total.
  • Fraudulent claims.

How Payouts Are Made

If the trigger is met on any Covered Day at your insured location, we automatically raise a claim on your behalf and let you know by email or SMS within 24 hours. To receive your payment, you’ll need to accept the claim and provide your preferred payment details: either your bank account details or your PayPal account.

If you haven’t accepted your claim, WeatherIt will send you reminders by email or SMS. Your payout remains available for you to accept.

We use weather data from the BOM to confirm rainfall levels. If that data is unavailable, we will use secondary data from the ECMWF.

The name of the applicable BOM weather station closest to your insured location and its distance from that location are shown in your policy schedule and we will source rainfall data from that weather station. The location of the BOM weather station will likely differ from your actual insured location, with this distance identified on your policy schedule. Where secondary data from the ECMWF is used, we will obtain data for the location of the weather station shown in your policy schedule.

There is no excess to pay.

Once we obtain data from the BOM or ECMWF, as applicable, this data will not be modified, and it shall be considered final, accurate and binding for all parties. No extraneous evidence of rainfall shall be considered by the BOM, ECMWF or us.

We assess rainfall data for up to 2 days after your insured dates end. If the trigger has not been met within that window, no payout is due and the claim is closed.

Cancelling Your Insurance

Unless you cancel this insurance as set out below, your cover remains in place for your insured dates and insured location regardless of whether your protected activity proceeds, changes, or is cancelled. If the trigger is met on any Covered Day, you will still receive the payout amount for that Covered Day, up to your Maximum Payout amount.

Cancelling your insurance: to cancel, contact WeatherIt at hello@weatherit.ai.

  • If you cancel 7 days or more before the start of your insured dates, you’ll receive a full refund of the Total Paid shown in your policy schedule. Refunds are paid to your nominated bank account or by PayPal.
  • If you cancel less than 7 days before the start of your insured dates, there is no refund of your premium.
